My Practice
Successful therapy addresses both current symptoms and underlying causes. Our current moods, behaviors and functioning result from a combination of life experiences, genetics and social or environmental stressors. When we neither examine nor give expression to our unique histories, we allow pathological narratives and traumas to build up over time. This often results in negative thought patterns, self-destructive behaviors, dysfunctional relationships and emotional pain. Therapy helps you to examine how your past experiences may be impacting your current functioning and make changes that will benefit your overall health.
Successful treatment stipulates that the relationship bewteen the client and the therapist is collaborative I believe that you are the expert on yourself. We will work together to assess your concerns and set treatment goals. These will be intermittently reassessed (and perhaps modified) and reformulated, as required. I will elicit your feedback (both positive and negative) about your experiences in therapy and adjust treatment accordingly to best meet your needs. If you have had previous treatment, I want to hear about those experiences and learn what was or was not helpful. It may be important to have a conversation about what therapy is and what it is not.
I am committed to working with diverse communities and having conversations about oppression. I am open to talking about interpersonal, intrapersonal and systemic racism, sexism, homophobia and socioeconomic status. I strive to create a safe space in which to examine identity and privilege.
Much of my role is that of being a consistent, authentic and non-judgemental presence, who will offer validation and support. We will work collaboratively and may focus on things like: finding effective ways of managing (and tolerating) difficult emotions; exploring healthy coping skills to better handle stressors; identifying potential triggers which result in emotional reactivity; effectively communicating your needs to others and establishing healthy boundaries; navigating interpersonal relationships. Our work together will heighten your self-awareness and enhance emotional growth. I may point out themes or patterns that I observe and offer alternate, nuanced perspectives. I will gently challenge you (when indicated) and help you assign responsibility to others and/or accept responsibility when indicated. Ultimately, you will experience a a decrease in distressing symptoms and feel more authentic, competent and empowered.
I employ a holistic approach to treatment, adapting to the unique needs of each client. I am not driven by diagnoses or pathology. While I am trained in providing trauma informed care, I utilize psychodynamic, family systems, strengths-based, interpersonal and cognitive behavioral modalities.
